Meet JoAnn Jansen…

JoAnn Jansen was recognised as a dancer in 1996, and choreographer in 2004. She has collaborated with celebrities including Harrison Ford as choreographer and acting coach, Jennifer Aniston, and Antonio Banderas in the blockbuster film Take the Lead. Take the Lead showcased styles of dance from Hip Hop through to Ballroom with an emphasis on partnering, breaks and rhythm.

As an industry professional, JoAnn encourages others to broaden their career. “Dance is all dance. You need to understand the art form and bring a personality.” This personality has enabled her to make what she describes as an “obvious transition” from choreographer to director. In a competitive industry, JoAnn states that you need to “work as hard as you can in front of decision makers, keep up connections, make choreographers recognise you, have an agent and an interest in how the business works here.”

With an impressive list of credits to her name, JoAnn works side by side with her agent at Clear Talent Group in LA. “The good thing about Clear Talent Group is there is not an overload of clients, they are funky, they give clients the attention they need, they get what I want, they are smart and current yet polite and tough.”

Check out JoAnn Jansen’s amazing list of credits below!

FAME is back!! Auditions in Oct!

FAME THE MUSICAL is back. It will return to Australia in a national tour beginning at Melbourne’s Regent Theatre on April 18. It will open in Brisbane at the Lyric Theatre QPAC on June 20 and in Sydney in early September.

Produced by John Frost and Directed and Choreographed by Kelley Abbey, FAME THE MUSICAL is the story of the kids from New York’s School for the Performing Arts who inspired a generation and sparked sales of untold millions of legwarmers.

Fame is, almost uniquely, a classic of cinema, television and music theatre. The movie, released in 1980, won an Academy Award and swept the world. The TV show ran for six seasons, won numerous Emmy Awards and was broadcast in over 70 countries. And FAME THE MUSICAL ran for a decade on the West End and has been seen by ten million worldwide. John Frost believes the time is right for his new production.

‘This is a show with wonderful songs and sensational dancing. The fact that the public can’t get enough of Australian Idol, So You Think You can Dance, Dancing with the Stars and Masterchef - like FAME all about aspiration and inspiration - tells me that the time is right for this spectacular new show.

‘We will be looking for 30 young and dynamic dancers/singers of all cultural backgrounds. And we expect to see hundreds at the auditions, most of them in leg warmers and leotards.

‘The auditions mirror the theme of Fame, that young people can break through in the entertainment world and become what they want – if they work at it.’ (The original School for the Performing Arts’ graduates include Alicia Keys, Jennifer Aniston, Liza Minnelli, Al Pacino and Suzanne Vega.)

“You want fame? Well fame costs. And right here is where you start paying. In sweat!’ ‘We won’t be quite so blunt,’ John Frost says, ‘but it is certainly true that a new generation of music theatre stars are likely to emerge from these auditions. It’s up to them. So it’s going to be a very exciting time.’

Farewell Dirty Dancing’s Swayze

On behalf of all at Dance Informa, we would like to pass on our condolences to Patrick Swayze’s family and friends. The talented dancer and actor lost his battle to Pancreatic Cancer at only 57 years of age yesterday.

The son of a choreographer, Patrick shot to fame in the blockbuster film Dirty Dancing that has seen fans mimic his dance moves for years. However, his friends and family will remember him for his down to earth nature and personality.

Patrick was both a talented dancer and actor and will be greatly missed.

Hey guys,

I am in the process of finishing a television show and a movie based on dance…two projects I am putting my heart and soul into. My mission now is to start creating a musical in Japan and then go to whatever is next.
