Short Sweet+Dance in 4 Weeks!

Dear Dance Informa Friends,

Happy New Year!

2009 is gearing up to be another jam-packed year of dance.

Short Sweet+Dance is only four weeks away, and I can’t wait to be a part of the amazing energy that this Independent dance festival creates.  Just to give you an idea of how excited I am-some of the choreographers to feature in the festival include

Martin Del Amo, Paulina Quinteros, Dirty Feet, Victoria Chiu, Marnie Palomares, Brian Lucas with Phluxus Dance Collective, Jason Winters, Jacqui Howard, Tamara Tossey, Twenty Past Four Productions, Miranda Wheen, Richard Allen, Bianca Gallifuoco, Cecilie Farrar & Travers Ross.

The full official 2009 line-up can be viewed on http://www.shortandsweet.org so make sure that you check it out!

AND, to give you an indication of how diverse the line-up is, we will be featuring works that fuse everything from contemporary, ballroom, lyrical hip hop, tap, acrobatics, adagio, and African-all under ten minutes!

The season, which runs February 24th to March 14th 2009, will showcase the work of over thirty professional choreographers, and feature many emerging and established performing artists.

To buy tickets you can contact the Seymour Centre box office

www.seymourcentre.com.au or phone 02-9351 7940

The process for casting Short Sweet+Dance began back in late August, whereby over 80 applications were short-listed. From this number, 55 proposals were short-listed and over thirty works chosen for the festival.

Each week of the festival, ten works are presented as part of the week season, and six works are presented as part of the Wildcard series.

The wild card series are scheduled for Saturday Feb 28 and March 7 at 2pm. Make sure that you get down to check out these performances-the works are amazing, and feature artists from Link, Quantum Leap, QUT, Dance Works, VCA and Wesley College.

For all those dance addicts out there, who ran their feet in to the ground trying to catch all the companies at Festival First Night-February will bring another month exploding with dance. The good news being that Tuesday-Saturday you can come check out Short Sweet+Dance, and on a Sunday, the day of ‘rest’, turn on the box and support some of our very own SS+D choreographers like Travers Ross, who present their choreography weekly on Ten’s SYTYCD 2 series.

So much to look forward to and it’s only the end of January.

Oh, and before I forget, I should mention that I have just been appointed the new director of Western Sydney Dance Action.

So anyone wanting to check out what we do, how to get involved, swing a leg, buy a ticket, say hello or become a member, then look us up at http://www.wsda.org.au

That’s all from me for now.

Remember-your support can make dance happen

Ciao for now!

Olivia

Bangarra at Laycock Theatre

Bangarra at Laycock Street Theatre this Feb!

LAYCOCK STREET THEATRE presents

BANGARRA DANCE THEATRE -
TRUE STORIES

Choreographers Elma Kris (Emeret Lu) and Frances Rings (X300)

Internationally recognised as a leading exponent of Indigenous performing arts, Bangarra Dance Theatre kick starts its 2009 season with a thrilling tour of TRUE STORIES.

Acclaimed choreographer Frances Rings and dancer-turned-choreographer Elma Kris, together with the dancers of Australia’s most dynamic and exciting contemporary dance company, share their true stories with Australian audiences for the first time.  Choreographer Frances Rings presents the world premiere of X300.  “Essentially the work is about healing.  It’s a journey back to country - a chance to rejuvenate and heal old wounds.”

Dancer and choreographer Elma Kris has created a beautiful new work in her choreographic debut with Bangarra, entitled Emeret Lu, meaning “very old things”.  Including a special guest appearance by Murray Island descendant Smilar Sinak, Emeret Lu is a brilliant assemblage of traditional and contemporary dance; a celebration of rain, wind, hunting and the little-known Torres Strait Island culture.

“Performance with a passion and richness of culture” Adelaide Advertiser, 9 February 2008.

The Laycock Street Theatre is very proud to present this vibrant, moving and exciting double bill by Australia’s Contemporary Indigenous Dance Company - Bangarra Dance Theatre.
