Sydney Carnival 2!

What’s the best way to get into dancing professionally?
By showcasing your stuff!

And for those who are working professionally, it’s important to remember that you’re only as good as your last gig.

The second CARNIVAL held at Home Nightclub last week was a sensational night of dance – there were established and emerging choreographers and of course, those direct from L.A. – Tony Czar, Jian, Carey Ysais. The dancers were so hot that I couldn’t blink as I’d miss too much: there were femme fatales killing off their men and boys in heels. And the dancing! Oh the dancing! There was some ‘voguing’ to Madonna’s ‘Vogue’ (how appropriate!), and head-banging to Marilyn Manson. There was some core-wrenching contemporary (Jason Winters), some delightfully joyous contemporary (Marko Panzic) and a lyrical piece that was empowering and uplifting (Alicia Kasih). There was Flamenco, there was tapping and there was rapping with tapping! And of course, there was hip hop. Oh the hip hop!

THE HIP HOP! Where do I start? How do I start?! It was a truly innovative night of hip hop choreography and performance. It was HOT HOT HOT! And the dancers were FIERCE! The crowd absolutely loved it! There were agents, teachers and SYTYCD producers and judges all applauding and celebrating the enormous talent in Sydney, and of course every Joe Smith and Jane Jones who loves dance was there! If you weren’t, you better be there next time!

Congratulations to Nu Firm, J Town, Trav, and Cisqo who all commanded the audience with their unique styles! I could even blink, all of my senses were overwhelmed: from the music, to the original choreography, to the costumes, to the transitions, to the performance quality! There was also such diversity in their styles: from  fierceness (Nu Firm) to lyricism (J Town) to emotiveness (Trav) to showmanship (Cisqo).

To all the dancers that performed who are trying to crack into the professional dance world - you were amazing!

To all the big guns who still put themselves out there - you are deserving of your success.

There was a real buzz at CARNIVAL that can only be topped by the next Carnival. So… watch this space : )

UDC Opens New Studios!

Urban Dance Centre opened its brand new studios on the weekend with a bang!  And what and exciting event!  They are beautiful studios, with more developments to come.  At the moment, there is a smaller studio in the front with a beautiful, big studio next to it that can be divided into 2 - so watch out for an expanding timetable in the future!

The event started with the much anticipated Tabitha and Napoleon workshops.  Although I didn’t get to attend these workshops, we got to see the results - some fun and creative routines which were showcased at the opening party.  The event opened with Tabitha and Napoleon cutting the ribbon, which was stretched from one side of the studio to the other - a big feat!  But how exciting! Urban Dance Centre is beginning to put itself on the world dance map. What a great start for the new studios.

The afternoon then rolled on as we saw a performance from Urban Dance Project, and all the routines from the workshop ( after a quick practice in the space :-) )…it was a rather casual afternoon, but it suited the family feel of the studios. Everyone was really encouraging of each other as they got up to perform.  To top off the performances, we got to view Tabitha perform herself, and she is tight!  Tabitha is a great dancer, as well as a fantastic choreographer with her husband of 11 years.  They were celebrating their 11th wedding anniversary whilst here in OZ!  How amazing.  Napoleon however, did not perform due to a shoulder injury.

One other highlight for me personally was to see 3 of my occasional ballet students, Natalie, Tahlia and Lily, perform a mix of hip hop styles in a trio.  I only ever see them in ballet class…they were great and are developing into very skilled and versatile little dancers.  Which is what will happen if you train under the skilled teachers @ UDC…Go girls!  Overall the event was a really nice opening for a studio that has come so far in such a short time, with huge things to come.  Make sure you get down to check out the studios and do one of the many casual classes on offer.

Mwa xx
