New Adventures will present Director Matthew Bourne’s production of The Red Shoes in its first-ever American debut as part of a world premiere tour, starting at the Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles, on September 15. The Olivier Award-winning production will continue to the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., Blumenthal Performing Arts in Charlotte, North Carolina, and NYC’s New York City Center.
During the U.S. tour, the role of Victoria Page, the girl who dreams of being a great dancer, will be performed by New Adventures’ Cordelia Braithwaite. For the New York City Center run, New York City Ballet’s Sara Mearns will play the role of Page. American Ballet Theatre’s Marcelo Gomez will make his debut as Julian Craster. Gomez previously performed with New Adventures in The Car Man in Sadler’s Wells in 2015, and in Matthew Bourne’s Swan Lake in Tokyo in 2014.
Other leading cast members will include Sam Archer, Jack Jones, Michela Meazza, Anjali Mehra, Nicole Kabera, Danny Reubens and more.
The Red Shoes is based on the film by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger, and the Hans Christian Andersen fairytale. This production is set to a new score arranged by New Adventures Associate Artist Terry Davies, using the music of golden-age Hollywood composer Bernard Herrmann. The world premiere tour of The Red Shoes opened at the Theatre Royal Plymouth in November 2016, before a sold-out eight-week Christmas season at Sadler’s Wells, which was the fastest selling run in New Adventures history.
