After a two-year pandemic hiatus, the Young Choreographer’s Festival is returning for its 11th season to present new dance works from emerging artists curated by a highly esteemed panel, on June 18, at the Peter Jay Sharp Theater at Symphony Space. With a mission to foster and cultivate talented young artists by providing resources and opportunity, each selected dance maker is mentored through the creative process with private workshop classes, a talk-back panel and rehearsal space to realize a first draft of a new work and to present to a live audience.
With artists age 18-25 and working in the genres of ballet, contemporary, modern, jazz and street jazz, this year’s selected dance makers are Paloma Gaspar de Alba, Samantha Chapa, Hailey Cindric, Devon Custalow, Moriah Markowitz, Gina Menichino, Myke Myklegard, Easton Nguyen, Solange Rodrigues, Andrea Saum and Garet Wierdsma. The evening will also feature Jenn Rose (2020 SDFC Breakout Award Winner), KC Castellano (alumni, BET’s Born to Dance, Lady Gaga), Kanyok Arts Initiative, The Steps on Broadway Conservatory and more.
“The last two years have been particularly challenging for artists,” explains the founder of the Young Choreographer’s Festival, Emily Bufferd. “Our mission feels particularly important this year, as the forward creative trajectory of these budding artists was paused for far too long, lacking opportunities to get in the studio with dancers and flex their choreographic muscles. It is my sincere pleasure to be a part of these artists’ journey to the stage, and be able to provide them valuable resources to invest in their craft, refine their voices, and be connected to a network of individuals who can help them realize their dreams.”
The Young Choreographer’s Festival will be held Saturday, June 18, at 8pm. Advance tickets are $40 and available online at www.symphonyspace.org/events/vp-the-young-choreographers-festival-1-1. Student and senior tickets are available for $35, and groups of 10 or more will receive special discounted rates. Tickets will be sold at the door for $45.
