In the competitive dance world, Starbound National Talent Competition has earned a special place among the top names in the industry. Founded in 1994, Starbound has grown into one of the largest and most respected dance competitions in the United States, admired for its inclusive and family-like atmosphere. This Dance Informa interview brings us behind the scenes with founder Sandra Coyte, revealing the journey behind Starbound’s success, its impact on the dance community and the exciting plans in store for the future.

Since its inception, Starbound has distinguished itself with a unique combination of professionalism and warmth. Besides having the most regional events per season, it is also recognized by many from its appearances on the hit show, Dance Moms. The competition also boasts a prestigious judging panel, which includes top-tier talent from Broadway choreographers, Radio City Rockettes, and dancers with credits in film and television.

Coyte’s vision for Starbound grew out of her own experiences as a dance teacher and studio owner. Reflecting on her motivations for founding Starbound, Coyte explains, “I knew a competition was needed which could relate to the customer as their peer. I also knew we needed some new fresh ideas to pioneer this industry!” From its earliest days, Starbound has championed a focus on customer service, setting itself apart by building strong relationships with studio directors, dancers and their families. “Customer Service is a genuine concern for how our events are run,” Coyte emphasizes. “Along with creating a family oriented, nurturing environment for teachers, dancers and their families.”

Building a platform like Starbound didn’t come without its challenges, particularly in an industry where women-owned businesses are still in the minority. “The largest challenge was being a female and a mom of two young children trying to make her mark in a male-dominated corporate platform,” Coyte reflects. “Having to prove that our customers are families, and a family-friendly event is what was needed. Nothing corporate about that!” Starbound’s commitment to this vision has made it a favorite in the dance community and a source of inspiration for dancers of all levels.

Starbound’s impact also extends beyond the competition floor. Through its partnership with the Dancers Care Foundation, Starbound has raised over $2.4 million for cancer research, underscoring its dedication to making a positive difference. The community can look forward to even more in the coming years. “We plan on expanding Dancers Care Foundation by holding a NYC awards gala in 2026, where dancers can earn their performance place and meet some of the dance idols from Broadway,” Coyte reveals. On the topic of what else we can expect in the coming years, Coyte mentions, “We also plan on an international tour to Australia, London and Ireland.”

When it comes to inclusivity, Starbound goes the extra mile to ensure that dancers of all levels feel supported and inspired. “We work hard to make sure all dancers shine,” Coyte shares. “Not just the top overall, but all for their hard work and efforts. We are constantly looking for ways to motivate and inspire the young inexperienced dancer.”

This approach has become one of Starbound’s defining characteristics, fostering an environment where everyone — from beginners to advanced dancers — can feel comfortable and motivated. It’s heartening for some of the judges to go to the same cities year after year and watch the dancers grow from season to season. Starbound’s events celebrate effort and growth alongside achievement, which Coyte sees as integral to the competition’s core mission.

As Starbound continues to grow and evolve, Coyte remains dedicated to her original vision — one that places people and their passion for dance at its heart. Whether creating new opportunities for dancers or building a positive dance community, Starbound is poised to leave an even bigger mark on the dance world in the years to come.
